Well you can tell everybody down in ol' Frisco/Tell 'em Tiny Montgomery says hello - Cookies Cookies Who Wants Cookies?.

"This cookie is making love to my tongue."

Apparently, this is a direct quote from a customer at the St. Louis Curio Shoppe after taking a bite of one of my gooey butter cookies. I don't suppose a cook can ask for much more than that.

Add last weekend's three-day, snack-selling extravaganza at the Rock n Roll Craft Show to this weekend's 48 dozen gooey butter cookies in 11 different flavors and I'm feeling pretty good about this selling food for a [semi] living thing. Of course, I know it won't be as easy as all that but it's a start!

So, until I formulate what else I'm doing (and there will be soup for sale, I promise!), I will be offering cookies for sale at $10/doz or $25/3 dozen. Email me at: clp772@gmail.com to discuss types of cookies available, and for more information in general. If you have anything else in mind that you don't want to cook/bake yourself, just let me know and we'll figure something out!

Now, I've had enough, my box is clean/You know what I'm sayin' and you know what I mean/Odds and ends, odds and ends/Lost time is not found again

It's been ages and I can almost say I have plenty of excuses since it is that time of year. I seriously think we've been sent through some time warp. How is it possibly the week of Christmas already? It's gotten to the point where I swear I can see life whizzing by in my peripheral vision. Slow down already, wouldja?

First of all, I spent most of the writing energy of the last week or so writing my best of 2008 list for the KDHX blog. I encourage you to read it and comment. Discuss, argue with me, agree with me. Whatev. The most curious thing is that this year, for maybe the first time, I was pretty sure I had a favorite record that was going to be hitting all the other hipster/magazine/website lists. But no, my most beloved record this year, Cold War Kids Loyalty to Loyalty, was nowhere to be found on any of the lists I checked. And here I thought I had jumped on some racing CWK bandwagon. And so all is well and normal in the world - I champion a band that very few people care about. It's a thankless job, but someone has to do it. On the other hand, Elbow, who were very narrowly edged out by CWK, were all over the lists this year. Go figure.

Second, I've spent most of my time making cookies and candy for Christmas. I'm not sure why I make so much, but it's a habit and frankly, one of my favorite things about December are cookie and candy breakfasts. I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that.

Third, I've spent an inordinate amount of time goofing off on the Internet and just hanging out with the other half (and oftentimes doing both at the same time). Facebook seems to have simultaneously become an obsession amongst my friends and acquaintances so it is a fantastic (horrific?) time waster. And then, of course, there's my Scottish Correspondent who keeps me hopping.

Fourthly, it's almost Christmas, yo! List making, shopping, gift making, wrapping -- it all takes more time than you think it's going to. And if you have your laptop open beside you and stop to chat, answer emails and compulsively read Facebook status updates, well, it takes even more time.

I've posted a bunch of photos on Facebook but I throw some on here too, just to round this out. First, a couple of batches of cookies - really delicious molasses cookies and very adorable but not so tasty cat's paw cookies.

I never tire of taking photos of my cats. Yeah, it's a cliche, but they're all so fucking cute, what do you want me to do? So, here's Olive looking particularly regal. I wish I could say that look was for me, but she was gazing adoringly at Steve as he descended the staircase behind me.

I revived the crocheted wire jewelry idea to make earrings and a necklace for my mom for Christmas. I love these dark red and smooth garnet chunks and I wish I could remember what the hell that center stone is. Probably some sort of agate.

I decided that since I was in the mood to crochet wire and beads, I'd make a little something for myself. I adore the tiny Japanese glass beads in this one. They really look much more like actual turquoise than glass. The center pendant is a coin Dana brought me from China ages ago and that's been sitting in my stash, waiting for inspiration.

A couple weeks ago I decided to clean up my yarn stash that was taking up residence in a corner of the living room for no real reason other than sheer laziness on my part. So, I sorted through it to keep a few balls out for immediate projects and stored in a manageable caddy. In the meantime, here's what the sorting mess looked liked. If you look close, Olive is at the end of the couch, nearly buried in yarn. She seemed to enjoy the process.

This is nothing but a photo of pretty clouds taken with my mobile phone last week. Depending on the lighting and setting, I can get some really interesting pictures of this little thing.

And last but not least, as I was driving home on Saturday from a lovely outing with Dana (finally!) I was going through the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood when I looked up and saw scores of crows! So many and it made me so happy to see them returning in such numbers, finally, after the scourge of West Nile virus. I stopped in the middle of Chouteau to take some photos and this is a case where the limitations of the mobile camera are woefully apparent. Nonetheless, I got to document the numbers, if not the details, of the many crows. All of the birds (which show up as black dots) are magnificent, big black crows. Click on the photo and I swear you will see the dots, in the foreground tree and in all those trees at the other end of the lot!

And now, I need a job. Who's got one for me?

Why oh why do you treat me like a snowman

I have been a neglectful blogger. I just haven't had time these last few days. Let's see, to catch up with dinner reports, we weren't home together at dinner time last Thursday; and on Friday night we had pork pad thai from King & I. On Saturday I reprised the portabella cream pasta from Steve's birthday which we had with a simple romaine and tomato salad. Yum. Last night I made a pot of chili that turned out quite nicely. I cooked a batch of pinto beans in the pressure cooker, then made a big batch of chili using languiza sausage (sort of like chorizorizo). Topped with grated cheese and oyster crackers, it was great with a bottle of merlot.

Today is Christmas baking and cooking day. So far I've made lemon cornmeal poppyseed cookies, chocolate almond biscotti drizzled with white chocolate, milk chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies (chilling in the fridge but not yet baked), cream cheese mints, white chocolate nut clusters and I'm getting ready to prepare a chocolate walnut buttercrunch toffee. Who knows what else I can squeeze in.

Dinner tonight will be leftover chili. Maybe chili mac using leftover plain pasta from Saturday...

Oh, and I hate snow. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty for about an hour, then it freezes to ice and makes driving in the City hazardous and horrible..

Whole Wheat Mexican Pasta Salad!

Hey, remember me? I'm back and itching to cook something for you because I've missed seeing you all these last couple weeks! To celebrate Cinco de Mayo (albeit a day or so late), and to embrace this ridiculously warm (hot!) weather, I'm thinking that a cold pasta salad with Mexican flavors is just the ticket for this weather.

To make it healthy, I will start with whole wheat rotini pasta, add some black beans (and voila! there's that complete protein right there!), and a whole lot of fresh vegetables. I don't know exactly what vegetables yet because I want to see what looks good at the market, but I know there will be avocado, tomato, and roasted corn. And I think perhaps just a smidgen of fresh mango for a hit of sweet-tartness. The dressing will be a slightly spicy lime and cumin accented vinaigrette and will perfectly complement the pasta and vegetables. I can stop there for vegans, but if anyone wants, I will add chunks of pepperjack cheese for some extra flavor. Of course, this salad can be a meal in itself, but also a fine side to any grilled meat!

How about some cookies for dessert? Mexican orange sugar cookies, fragrant with a touch of anise and cinnamon sound perfect!

Prices:

Pasta salad:   1 quart/$8         2 quarts/$15         3 quarts/$21        4 quarts/$28

Cookies: Half dozen/$3

Please let me know by 10am Sunday (May 6) if you'd like to order! Deliveries/pickups will be on Monday (or otherwise arranged). Email me at clp772@gmail.com or cattmkitchen@gmail.com!

Tiny Montgomery Kitchen

While I love making soup (something about stirring a big simmering pot full of good things), I am also available to make any of the items I've posted about earlier. This includes many different kinds of cookies (and what has become my specialty, gooey butter cookies), deep dish pizzas, baked pasta, and spinach feta pie in phyllo. These are all excellent items for Superbowl parties (hint hint!).

Please check previous blog entries for pricing and specifics if you are interested. Also, you can always email me (cattmkitchen@gmail.com or clp772@gmail.com) if you have a custom request.

Split Pea, Meaty and Vegetarian, Madeleines for Dessert!

I was floundering this week, trying to decide what soup I wanted to make. Two different kinds? One kind in meaty and vegetarian forms? Experiment with bold flavors? (That last one is coming soon...) I was meandering around a food store, looking for inspiration when I stumbled upon my answer. So, this week we shall have Split Pea! Naturally thick and creamy, I will start with a mirepoix for rich flavor and add a homemade smoky sausage, diced potatoes, and a touch of barley to round out the soup. The vegetarian version can be with or without a similarly flavored meat substitute - your choice!

My sweet tooth is feeling terribly neglected so cakes and cookies are always in the back of my mind. Madeleines are a perfect combination of both so petite madeleines
it shall be this week! Dark chocolate dipped if you so desire, plain if you don't Or a mixture of both! FYI, madeleines are a buttery French cake-like cookie with a hint of lemon baked in a shell-shaped mold.

Soup
1 quart/$8     2 quarts/$15     3 quarts/$22     4 quarts/$28

Cookies
$5/doz (I can mix and match plain and choco dipped!)

(Payment via cash, check, credit, or Paypal)

I'm taking orders till Wednesday evening. Orders taken via emails, text messages, carrier pigeon, smoke signals, etc. Pickup will be Friday evening and Saturday. Delivery available for an additional $2 to City and inner ring suburbs.
