Split Pea, Meaty and Vegetarian, Madeleines for Dessert!

I was floundering this week, trying to decide what soup I wanted to make. Two different kinds? One kind in meaty and vegetarian forms? Experiment with bold flavors? (That last one is coming soon...) I was meandering around a food store, looking for inspiration when I stumbled upon my answer. So, this week we shall have Split Pea! Naturally thick and creamy, I will start with a mirepoix for rich flavor and add a homemade smoky sausage, diced potatoes, and a touch of barley to round out the soup. The vegetarian version can be with or without a similarly flavored meat substitute - your choice!

My sweet tooth is feeling terribly neglected so cakes and cookies are always in the back of my mind. Madeleines are a perfect combination of both so petite madeleines
it shall be this week! Dark chocolate dipped if you so desire, plain if you don't Or a mixture of both! FYI, madeleines are a buttery French cake-like cookie with a hint of lemon baked in a shell-shaped mold.

Black Bean Sweet Potato Chili Stew (with or without smoked sausage)

There is something magical about the combination of black beans and tender sweet potatoes, and with the addition of smokey, savory spices like paprika and cumin makes it even better. This stew is loaded full of vegetables including carrots, celery, onions, garlic (lots of garlic!), a variety of peppers, a splash of tomatoes, and the counterpoint sweetness of bite-sized chunks of sweet potatoes to the savory spice. The vegetarian version will be as is. If desired, I will add slices of smoked sausage for extra heartiness. This chili makes a filling bowl that you can eat as is, but if you want, it will be delicious served over your favorite grain like brown rice, quinoa, or couscous.
It's going to be a chilly week so I'm firing up the oven for freshly baked small loaves of crusty beer bread with just a touch of cornmeal for crunch to accompany your stew.

Oh My Gosh, It's FINALLY Time for Soup!

Holidays, illness, and stupid stupid weather has blocked my soup making for long enough! With the turning of the year, I have embraced a culinary flexitarian lifestyle, which means I've cut my meat consumption way down. With that in mind, and due to the fact that I have a lot of vegetarian customers anyway, there will be more entirely vegetarian (and often vegan) soup weeks from here on in. Vegetarian soups are healthy and good for you, and I promise they will always be completely delicious.

To kick off 2014 I want to make a pot of delicious, rich vegetable soup featuring the best vegetables I can find in the market (but no broccoli or corn this time around), plus protein-rich garbanzo beans, and a touch of quinoa to make it extra nutritious, along with a starter stock that will be freshly made from roasted vegetables like carrots, onions, and garlic. I think a bit of spice will be in order (just a touch, nothing scorching) as well.

To accompany the soup, I'm making mini-loaves of jalapeno cornbread (no corn added this time around). This is good stuff for January weather!

Prices as follows:

1 quart/$8     2 quarts/$15      3 quarts/$22     4 quarts/$28

Loaves: $2/each

I cannot wait to start cooking! I've missed seeing you all!
